Can you Split Toprol XL 50mg tablets?

Is this okay to do? I wasn't paying attention when my doctor wrote the prescription out. I always take 25mg tablets for six years now. I guess he just was in a hurry. Are these pill hard to split, anybody do this? In the past when I tired splitting pills, some of them crumbled and you lost part of the med.
